Green and leafy. These are two of the most important things to remember when you are looking for foods high in antioxidants. But this is really not new information for most people, especially those who are natural healing proponents. But many people still aren?t sure why antioxidants are good for the body, or how they help.

Antioxidants boost the immune system. Basically, antioxidants help to protect the body at the cellular level. This can lower your risk of illnesses and infections. The chlorophyll in green, leafy vegetables will also help to protect the internal organs from damage. Plus, antioxidants promote the cleansing of the colon. It is important to take into consideration where your green, leafy vegetables come from; poor environmental conditions in the growing area can lower the vegetable’s ability to provide you with antioxidants. If this is a concern, take an antioxidant supplement.

Particularly in Western countries like the United States, millions of dollars are spent every year on veterinary bills for Fido and Spot. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with this! It is wonderful that people love their pets so much! But some people who love their pets cannot afford some of the more expensive pharmaceutical treatments for their pets’ symptoms. So what can a pet owner do?

Many veterinarians and veterinary clinics are starting to offer homeopathic remedies for pets. Many of these treatments are not only cheaper than some of the conventional pharmaceutical medicines, but they are also easier on your pet’s body and are just as effective. And while it is important to know that, like human homeopathic remedies, there is limited scientific research proving the efficacy of these products, homeopathic veterinarians still state that these remedies can work well for some pets.

And while some of the criticisms are founded in actual concern for the patient ? such as physicians being concerned that seriously ill people will not seek traditional medical help – other criticisms are not realistic.

There has been almost no research to show that the average person won’t reap some kind of benefit from both rolfing and yoga. Be the benefits mental, emotional, physical, or social, almost everyone can count of some type of help from participating in these therapies. Of course, as with any physical activity, a doctor should be consulted before you begin; some people with skeletal deformities and other types of physical problems could have problems with these practices, especially if they are not provided by a trained professional.

The very first journal developed in the field of art therapy was the Bulletin of Art Therapy, published in 1961, now called the American Journal of Art Therapy. Founder and editor, Elinor Ulman, felt that anything that was to be called art therapy must involve both art and therapy, also saying that art was the meeting ground of the inner and outer world. Both theories brought into effect the art therapy of today.

In addition to Elinor Ulman, she had a friend by the name of Bernard Levy–Chairman of the Psychology Department at the George Washington Univeristy, whom she worked with at D.C. General Hospital in the 1950s. Levy, also an artist and psychologist, helped her begin the Bulletin of Art Therapy in addition to an early training program at the George Washington University.

Elinor Ulman was one of several pioneers involved with the Steering Committee that began the birth of the American Art Therapy Association, actually born on the second meeting at the University of Louisville in 1969. Papers from art therapist in Canada and England were published in Ulman’s Bulletin journal, even though the growth of art therapy in other countries has been much slower than in the United States.

The American Art Therapy Association was affiliated with the American Journal of Art Therapy from 1974 to 1983, then began their own journal titled Art Therapy. Published regularly and mostly quarterly, most of these magazines, other than the original Bulletin, are still being published today.

Unfortunately, the American Journal of Art Therapy does not have open access for the general public nor has a hybrid, but does list alternative readings for those interested in the journal. They list the articles in the magazine, but with no Website available, it is impossible to click on the articles and go to the areas they list or if one is needed.

Donna Betts, MA, SYT-BC, has written several articles in the American Journal of Art Therapy, but had to develop her own published articles in pdf format for each one, placing it on her own web for the general mass to read it. A good way to view her American Journal of Art Therapy articles is to research her work and then look up her articles online that way.

Presently published by the Vermont College of Norwich University, the American Journal of Art Therapy is listed under the subjects of Therapeutics, Rehabilitation, Education, and Pharmacology. Obviously, the field of art therapy has been difficult to promote, as it was a beginning hybrid of both psychology and art, yet is used in many other fields.

For most things in life, be it a work project, a school assignment, or a home repair task, the best thing to do is to start at the top and work your way down. This usually ensures that everything will get done one time and correctly. Unfortunately, this is not that way that body cleansing should work. The best thing to do when you begin detoxifying your body is to start at the bottom.

Cleansing the colon is the beginning of the long process of detoxification. This is because the colon can become built up, or even backed up, with waste. And if no waste is leaving the body, you body is not cleaning itself properly. After you have used a colon cleansing method recommended by a professional natural health practitioner, you can build up your immune system and internal organs with a natural food diet.

Yoga is commonly known in the western world as a method of exercise. However, yoga in fact takes its root in a much different place. Yoga actually began as a part of the Hindu religion, one of the major religions practiced in India. India is, of course, where yoga really began. Yoga is defined in the Hindu religion as being closely related to asceticism and meditation. The practice of yoga actually does teach meditation in some form, even in its practice in the west.

In western countries like the United States yoga is more of a forms of exercise than it is a practice of religion. Yoga involves movements and poses that strengthen the body as well as bringing a meditative quality to the mind. There are several different types of yoga commonly practiced in the United States, especially Hatha Yoga.

Rolfing massage is a technique devised by Dr. Ida Rolf, in the 1950s. Her technique has evolved over the years to improve the structure and function of the connective tissue of the body. This procedure manipulates the connective tissue that connects muscles to the skeletal attachments. Rolfing massage is implemented to create balance everywhere in the body in relation to their center of gravity.

Our society has become more sedentary in our everyday lives. Many people work behind desks and their only exercise is what they get while typing on a keyboard or getting up for coffee and TV breaks. Over time the connective tissue (fascia) thickens and becomes less functional. Fascia is thick fibrous plates of connective tissue that protect and envelope muscles and joins them to connect with cartilage and bone. The thicker the plates become the less elastic they become. Over time posture is affected. Rolfing massage breaks down the thick fascia allowing for better posture and better range of motion of body parts.

Rolfing massage therapy is preformed over a series of visits lasting an hour to an hour and 15 minutes each time. The goal is to realign and restructure the connective tissue, thereby realigning the body in relation to its center of gravity. With each Rolfing massage the client is asked to perform certain exercises such as walking, bending the knees, flexing and extending joints before and after the treatment. The level of movement and function is noted before and after treatment each time.

With poor posture the body can come out of alignment. Consider this scenario: The curvature of the neck could be off just enough to cause the head to come out of alignment with the spinal column, which could result in severe headaches and neck and shoulder pain. Rolfing massage works to break down those tight bands of connective fascia that constrict and contract the muscles and their skeletal attachments. Over time there will be noticeable improvement.

Poor posture and poor alignment is learned over time. Our muscle fibers react to an injury and we might favor that injured part of the body. We might favor the injury long after the injury has healed because the fibers retain a long memory of the injury. Hence a permanent change in how we maintain our posture may gradually take place. It is the cooperation between practitioner and client to work to change the structure of the connective fascia to regain a more functional body alignment in relation to his/her center of gravity.

The body and mind work together to make Rolfing massage effective. Through the course of the treatment and beyond you will be relearning how to maintain balance in the body. The gradual outcome should be that you are able to carry your weight evenly without favoring one side over the other. Rolfing massage is not only for the limbs, but for every area of the body.

The profession of art therapist is not a new one, but it is one that is not familiar to many people. Art therapists are professional therapists who have extensive training in both art and psychotherapy. In order to be an art therapist, a person must hold a master’s degree in either art therapy or a similar field. This knowledge and education allows an art therapist to help patients identify emotional problems through artistic mediums.

Most patients of art therapy are able to cope with their problems like stress and personal trauma. Art therapists can bring out in a patient the ability to gain insight into their own minds and feelings, as well as boosting the patient’s ability to establish and maintain healthy relationships. All of these things are important parts of healing, and art therapists are trained to use the artistic processes of the mind to bring these results out of their patients.

When there seems to be a developmental disorder in your child, you want to do everything you can to help them. This is why the link between music therapy and Rett Syndrome has gotten so much press. By combining this effective and side effect free therapy with more traditional developmental therapies, music therapy and Rett Syndrome are working hand in hand to help children move through the world in a more constructive way – even as their bodies are trying to defy them.

Before you can learn about music therapy and Rett Syndrome, it will help to learn the basics of music therapy. In short, music therapy is the practice in which music is used as a tool to help a patient reach certain goals. For some patients, music might be used to encourage them during a particularly hard physical therapy session. For others, music might be used to help with mental disorders by allowing them to speak more freely about their troubles through lyrics, song sharing, etc. And in the case of Rett Syndrome, music seems to helping improve motor coordination, which can allow children to lead a more normal life.

The other side of the music therapy and Rett Syndrome discussion is the disorder itself. Characterized by jerking movements of the body, Rett Syndrome is a developmental disorder the presents itself in early childhood. Sometimes it can be as sever as to not allow the child to move their muscles properly, while in other cases, the child may be in extreme pain in trying to move against what their body is trying to do. This is generally a gradual onset disorder and a child may appear to be developing at a normal rate for the first few years of their life. But as the syndrome progresses, the child may begin to show autistic signs – toe walking, coordination troubles, and breathing troubles.

Caused by a genetic defect, Rett Syndrome does not have any cure as of yet, but it does appear to respond to concentrated therapy – like physical therapy. This can give the child more mobility while also helping them learn to use their body in a productive manner. By teaching children how to communicate through rhythm and music, the child can feel as though they are a part of their world as well as having the parent feel as though their child can ’speak’ to them. These children who use music therapy also seem to be able to make decisions on their own as well as lessening the jerky movements that their body uses.

The link between music therapy and Rett Syndrome progress is easy to see in the many research studies that have been done around the world.
